Devdas, Mr Bhansali’s reimagining of the Bengali novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, released on July 12, 2002.
It featured lavish sets, spectacular costumes and a now-legendary dance number featuring actresses Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit, who played Paro and Chandramukhi.
Devdas was screened at the Cannes Film Festival the year it released – it was Aishwarya’s first time at Cannes and she’s never missed an appearance since.
