Nutella, as we know the branded product today, was invented during WWII when Italian pastry maker Pietro Ferrero added hazelnuts to the limited supply of chocolate in order to make it stretch. As a result, Pasta Gianduja was created in 1946 ― which evolved and was later renamed Nutella in 1964.

The people over at Nutella say that the amount of Nutella produced in a year could cover the Great Wall of China 8 times and the weight of it is roughly the same as that of the Empire State Building in New York.

During the Napoleonic wars in 1806, due to a continental blockade, a chocolate shortage was caused. Chocolate makers in Turin, Italy still had to create confections so they added hazelnuts to chocolates in order to keep the prices down. Thus, the dynamic duo was born!

Nutella wasn’t available as a spread, the way we get it today. Instead, it was cut into slices and usually eaten on a slice of bread. It was only in 1951 that a spread form was developed breaking the stereotype that chocolate was only meant for special occasions.

This delightful dessert wasn’t available in the States until 1983. Initially, when it was available in the US, only specialty grocery stores used to stock Nutella. You couldn’t get hold of it unless you had an awesome Italian grandmother who would send a carton of Nutella every month.
