What is it about black eyeliner that is so damn powerful??? From ultra-mod floating flicks to no-frill retro wings, add some fluffy brows and lip gloss to the mix, and you’ll truly feel like the baddest b**** on the planet. And as if eyeliner doesn’t already hold such great power, TikTok beauty whizzes are shaking things up with their insanely fierce renditions of the trending reverse cat-eye. This is HANDS DOWN one of summer’s hottest viral trends and the best part? It’s 100% foolproof! All you require is your go-to neutral eyeshadow palette, a pitch-black eye pencil, and a bomb eye smudging brush, and you’ll be sporting a Tyra Banks-worthy smize in no time.
What’s The Buzz with Upside Down Liner?
We won’t call it a “new” eye makeup trend as some of you may have seen it way back in 2016 on celebs like Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, and Kim K. However, its recent resurgence is thanks to LA-based makeup artist @paintedbyspencer who recently showcased THEE ultimate no sweat and hassle-free under-eye-liner method that even beginners will master. And the reverse cat-eye is pretty straightforward — envision the same feline flick that we’ve grown to love but as Missy Elliot once said, put that (wing) down flip it and reverse it.
Spencer’s Detailed Five-Step How-To Guide:
Step 1: “Run a grayish-toned eyeshadow through the upper lid” — a brown eyeshadow with a gray undertone is best, which he blends over the crease with a fluffy brush.
Step 2: “Use that same shade and run it through the lower lash line,” using an eye shading brush.
Step 3: “This is where it gets fun. Now I’m taking a gel-black liner, and I’m going to run the pencil through my waterline. The important part here is to really extend that inner corner and wing it out on the outer corner.”
Step 4: “Take a detailed eyeshadow brush, with some black eyeshadow, to diffuse the edges.”
Step 5: “Add some mascara to the top and bottom lashes real quick, and that is the final look — isn’t it so easy!?” See his flawless tutorial video below:
