New Delhi: TableHero, a start-up providing an intelligent operating system for small local businesses, said on Tuesday that it has raised $1 million in a round led by early stage investor growX ventures.

Apart from growX, FreeCharge founders Kunal Shah and Sandeep Tandon, India Value Fund Advisors partner and former chief executive officer of Network 18, Haresh Chawla, Powai Lake ventures and Globevestor also took part in the funding round.

The fund will be used for product development and to expand engineering and product design.

“Our goal is to reimagine the small local business technology stack in a way that makes technology invisible for small local business owners. The first product in this stack will be an intelligence-driven, one-click website maker for restaurants. It completely takes all the effort out of building and managing a digital presence for a small local business,” said Deap Ubhi, co-founder and chief executive officer, TableHero.

Ubhi previously founded food search and discovery platform Burrp which was sold to Network 18 in 2010 and has also worked with FreeCharge as its chief operative officer.

Another co-founder, Aman Prakash Mohla, was part of the core engineering team at FreeCharge.

The company claims to be building an intelligent operating system that will simplify digital presence management, reservations, bookings, payments, customer loyalty and management for clients. The company will initially be launching its services in the US with a focus on West Coast cities such as Portland, Seattle, the Bay Area and Los Angeles. It will be targeting restaurants as its early adopters. Its first product will be an intelligent, one-click website builder for small businesses.

“Deap created Burrp, which we loved as consumers, ran Freecharge in a tough growth period, and is one of the best product guys ever to have worked in India. And he’s put together an amazing set of people to create a technology stack which has the potential to disrupt the long-standing hegemony of the incumbents in the food and beverage tech space across geographies,” said Sheetal Bahl, chief executive officer, growX ventures.

The start-up would compete with companies such as US-based Square (payment processor), OpenTable (restaurant reservation site) and Yelp (consumer review website).
