The Recipe:

Ingredients:

    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 2 large eggs
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fold in the semisweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are slightly soft.
  8. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Creating the Chessboard Design: a. Rolling the Dough:

    • Divide the dough into two equal portions.
    • Roll out each portion into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
    • Place one rectangle on top of the other to create a larger square.
    • Gently press the rectangles together to ensure they stick.

Cutting the Squares:

  • Using a sharp knife or a square-shaped cookie cutter, cut the dough into 2×2 inch squares.
  • Carefully transfer the squares to the baking sheet, leaving a small gap between each piece.

Creating the Chessboard Pattern:

  • Take a smaller, square-shaped cookie cutter (around 1 inch) and cut out the center of half the squares.
  • Switch the cut-out centers with their corresponding solid squares to create the alternating pattern of a chessboard.

Baking and Serving:

Preparing for Baking:

    • Place the baking sheet with the chessboard-patterned cookies in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes to firm up the dough.
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Baking the Cookies:

  • Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are slightly golden.
  • Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve these delectable cookies with a piping hot cup of coffee or a glass of cold milk.
  • Arrange them on a platter or in a cookie jar, showcasing the chessboard pattern for an eye-catching presentation.
