Carbs have been demonised for years. We grew up with our mums refusing to eat bread or cook pasta. Many of us are nervous about eating regular instead of sweet potatoes. We opt for ground up cauliflower over rice. And that’s because we’ve all been taught that carbs = broken down into glucose = stored as body fat. But that isn’t the whole story. We literally need carbohydrates to stay alive, let alone do any strenuous kind of exercise. And in some cases, eating carbs is the secret to creating a cracking body. Just look at bikini model Hayley Madigan, for example. The 27-year-old fitness star says that including slow-release carbs like wholegrain bread (YEP, BREAD), quinoa and oats have helped her to work out more effectively and build muscle. ‘I was always scared to eat carbs so I left them out until the weekend and usually have a cheat day on Sunday and binged on a lot of bad foods,’ she tells MailOnline. ‘I enjoy all carbs now and know I need them to fuel my training as well as stay lean and healthy.’ She says that no matter how hard you work, you can’t out train a bad diet – and she puts her revised nutritional plan down to her impressive gains. Hayley also makes sure to add plenty of healthy fats to her day, including nut butters, dark chocolate, avocado and salmon. And that all helps her with weight training – something she’s keen to promote among women as a form of ’empowerment’.
I feel unstoppable when I am in the gym leg pressing 270kg because I know how amazing it is for my body to be doing such a strong weight and how determined I am to lift such an amount especially as a petite woman.’ So, more wholegrain avo toast and weights, less fretting over food.
