“What is a lifestyle blog?”
It sounds like a simple question. But the more I’ve thought about it, the more layered it’s become.
If you’ve followed Girl vs Globe for a while (first of all, thank you ), you’ve probably noticed the shift. Yes, there’s still travel — but now there’s also food, fashion, self-confidence, creativity, and the messy, beautiful in-between moments of everyday life.
Some readers have embraced that evolution. Others have felt… less enthusiastic.
One comment recently stopped me in my tracks:
“Would also be good to see some actual travel experiences… Lifestyle blog not travel blog is really more what is happening here now.”
It wasn’t harsh. It wasn’t cruel. But it hit a nerve.
Not because it was wrong — but because it tapped into something I’d already been wrestling with:
Am I changing too much? Am I losing what made people care in the first place?
Instead of spiraling (okay, maybe after a little spiraling), I did what I always do when I’m confused — I wrote about it.
So let’s untangle it together.
So… What Is a Lifestyle Blog?
At its core, a lifestyle blog is a digital space that documents a person’s life and interests. It’s curated. It’s personal. It’s shaped by one individual’s perspective on the world.
Sounds simple enough.
But here’s where it gets tricky: that definition is incredibly broad.
A lifestyle blog can include:
-
Food and recipes
-
Travel
-
Fashion and beauty
-
Career advice
-
Relationships
-
Personal growth
-
Home décor
-
Finance
-
Fitness
-
Parenting
-
Creative projects
In theory, nothing is off limits.
A retired garden designer in Minnesota could run a lifestyle blog. So could a teenage activist in Taipei. Their content would look wildly different — yet both would fit under the same umbrella.
That’s the beauty of the term.
And also the problem.
The Misunderstanding Around “Lifestyle”
When people hear “lifestyle blogger,” they often picture something very specific:
A twenty-something woman posting about beauty products, outfits, brunch spots, and workout routines.
There’s nothing wrong with that. But the stereotype has created a narrow understanding of what lifestyle blogging means.
It’s often seen as:
-
Surface-level
-
Aesthetic over substance
-
“A bit of everything, but not deeply about anything”
-
Advice from someone too young to give it
When my boyfriend casually asked other bloggers what came to mind when they heard the term “lifestyle blogger,” the responses were revealing:
-
“Someone who scratches the surface of a lot of things.”
-
“Someone telling others how to live.”
-
“More concerned with appearances than depth.”
Ouch.
But also — interesting.
Because here’s the question underneath all of it:
Is writing about multiple parts of your life the same as lacking focus?
Travel Was Always Lifestyle
When I first started blogging, it was about travel. Cities. Cultures. Adventures. Stories from the road.
But travel was never just about destinations.
It was about growth.
About identity.
About figuring out who I was in unfamiliar places.
And over time, my life expanded beyond airports and hotel rooms.
I started caring about:
-
What I was cooking at home
-
How I felt in my own skin
-
The way I dressed
-
My mental health
-
My relationships
-
The routines that grounded me
Should those parts stay hidden because they aren’t “travel”?
Or are they simply the next chapter?
A Lifestyle Blog Is Evolution in Real Time
A lifestyle blog, at its best, isn’t random. It’s reflective.
It grows as the writer grows.
It shifts when priorities shift.
It deepens when experiences deepen.
It expands when curiosity expands.
It’s not about writing about “everything.”
It’s about writing about what matters — at this moment.
And sometimes, that moment isn’t a plane ticket. Sometimes it’s learning how to feel confident. Or trying a new recipe. Or questioning your own direction.
That doesn’t mean abandoning the past. It means allowing space for change.
Is There a Risk of Losing Focus?
Absolutely.
When you widen your lens, you risk:
-
Alienating readers who came for one specific thing
-
Being misunderstood
-
Feeling like you’re “watering down” your niche
But here’s the truth:
Humans aren’t niches.
We contain multitudes.
And maybe the most authentic thing a blog can do is reflect that complexity instead of boxing it in.
So… What Is a Lifestyle Blog?
It’s not just fashion.
It’s not just brunch photos.
It’s not just vague positivity quotes.
A lifestyle blog is a living archive of a person’s interests, values, and growth.
It’s a space where travel can sit next to recipes.
Where career reflections can live beside outfit posts.
Where vulnerability can exist alongside ambition.
It’s not about telling people how to live.
It’s about showing how one person lives — honestly, imperfectly, and in progress.
And maybe that’s the real point.
Not to stay exactly the same.
But to evolve — and let the blog evolve with you.
