A Death In The GunjA still from A Death In The Gunj.

  • A Death in The Gunj is Konkona’s first feature film as director

Konkona Sen Sharma has directed before – a Bengali short named Naamkoron – but A Death In The Gunj, included in the Toronto Film Festival line-up this year, is her feature debut as a director. As an accomplished actor and daughter of filmmaker Aparna Sen, her credentials are impeccable. And the trailer of A Death In The Gunj promises that the film itself will be a revelation, an unflinching examination of interpersonal dynamics and the emotions that come with it: lust, love, friendship, humiliation.

On the subject of the film’s cast, a slow clap for Konkona for bringing together Ranvir Shorey (her estranged husband), Kalki Koechlin, Tanuja, Om Puri, Vikrant Massey, Gulshan Devaiah and Tillotama Shome – the last being her co-star from the short film Nayantara’s Necklace.

A Death In The Gunj is set in 1979, in McCluskiegunj (the Gunj of the title), a small town in what is now Jharkhand. At various levels, the film is a coming of age story, a romance, a thriller and a journey of self-discovery.

You’ll love Vikrant as an awkward Shutu, who is mocked, ridiculed and humiliated by others in the family, lead by Ranvir and Kalki. You’ll be spooked by the ghost games played by the family and the spirit dance by the locals.

Everything goes topsy-turvy when Tani (the youngest in the family) disappears. Take a look:
