Google Wifi Router: All You Need to Know

Google Wifi Router: All You Need to Know
HIGHLIGHTS
Google Wifi is a router that optimises Wi-Fi network in the background
In large houses, multiple routers can be connected to avoid weak signals
It can be managed using the Google Wifi app for Android and iOS devices
With the rise of Internet-connected devices comes the demand for a Wi-Fi network that does not compromise on signal strength. And Google’s solution to that problem is the new Google Wifi, which was unveiled at the event the company hosted on October 4. This router relies on the enterprise-grade mesh network technology as well as its proprietary Network Assist technology to deliver a fast and reliable signal in all parts of the home.

Google says its new Network Assist technology takes away the pains of adjusting your router settings to get the best signals in certain areas of the home with weak or dead zones. This technology in Google Wifi, which comes just a year after the company its OnHub router, works in the background and tweaks the network strength “seamlessly transition your device between the Google Wifi system points in real time” to provide you a strong Wi-Fi signal as you move from one spot in the house to another.

The mesh Wi-Fi technology comes into play in bigger homes (with surface area larger than 1,500 square feet). You will be able to connect multiple Google Wifi units on the same network, so that you do not encounter dead zones in any part of the house as you move around by changing the access point behind the scenes.

Google Wifi is able to deliver AC1200 speeds (up to 300Mbps on 2.4GHz and up to 867Mbps on 5GHz) and is compatible with Bluetooth Smart and TX Beamforming. In order to use Google Wifi at your home, you will need a broadband Internet connection, a Google account, as well as an Android (4.0 or higher) or iOS (iOS 8 or higher) device to use the Google Wifi companion app.

The Google Wifi app lets you not only manage the Wi-Fi network from your smartphone but also provides parental controls by giving you the ability to cut off the Internet on your kids’ devices.

Made of plastic, the Google Wifi router looks like a small hockey puck and comes in White colour only. It will be up for pre-orders in the US starting November this year and hit stores the following month. A single unit of the new router will cost $129 (roughly Rs. 8,600), while a pack of three is priced at $299 (roughly Rs. 19,900).
